AI Regulation: What Business Leaders Need to Know

  • February 2, 2025: Prohibited AI practices become enforceable (already in effect).
  • August 2, 2025: Rules for general-purpose AI models, including transparency and copyright obligations, apply.
  • August 2, 2026: Full enforcement for high-risk AI systems, including conformity assessments, technical documentation, CE marking, and EU database registration.

Step 1: Inventory your AI systems

You cannot comply with regulations you do not understand, and you cannot understand your obligations without knowing what AI systems you use. Conduct a thorough inventory. Include not just systems you built, but AI features embedded in third-party software you use. Your CRM's lead scoring, your HR platform's resume screening, your customer service chatbot, all of these may qualify as AI systems under current definitions.
